The environment is at the heart of today's debates, and rightly so, because our well-being and survival on Earth are more threatened than ever. Human pressure on water, forest, and mineral resources, as well as our production, exploitation, and consumption practices, bring us close to what scientists call the tipping point.
What is the current situation regarding the impact of mining on the environment and surrounding populations? At COP 26, the Democratic Republic of Congo was recognized as a "solution country" to the global climate crisis. This highlights the urgent need for responsible environmental management programs to support global efforts against climate change.
While the country benefits economically from mining, there is an urgent need to improve environmental practices in the mining sector. Mining ecosystems and local populations are exposed to various pollutants with complex consequences. Thus, it is crucial to mobilize environmental and mining sector stakeholders around a common goal focused on positive change.
The city of Kolwezi, known as the cobalt capital of the world, has been selected to host the first environmental conference on the theme: “The Environment and Mining.”
Outlined Actions:
-
Conduct a comprehensive environmental diagnosis covering air, soil, and water quality, and assess contamination levels in the food chain.
-
Document complaints from residents and examine local hospital statistics on recurrent environmental illnesses.
-
Audit the environmental and social management systems of local mining companies.
-
Propose solutions for managing mining waste, both liquid and solid.
-
Recommend reforestation efforts to mitigate pollution consequences and initiate community awareness on environmental health.
